Surgeons performing minimally invasive surgical procedures suffer from the missing sense of touch, a drawback that poses major challenges and limits the utilization of this emerging surgical approach. This remains a global nightmare that chases surgeons on daily basis. Unfortunately, current laparoscopic tools bring no advancement over the 30 years old tools, providing no tactile feedback.

To bridge this three decades gap, the work of Wael is inspired toward restoring the tactile sensation using a smart sensing system that universally integrates with a variety of surgical tools and robots. The restored tactile information benefits both patients and surgeons, enabling safer surgery by preventing tissue damage and enhancing diagnostics by accurately detecting tumors and inflammation.

Ultimately, the goal of LaparoSense is to make MIS more efficient and accessible for a wider population of patients by improving surgeons’ experience, enhancing accuracy, and reducing the overall time and cost.
