He is actively involved as an Advisor and Co-Founder in developing the technology further, managing specific diagnostic products, and engaging with various business partners on diagnostic deals and collaborations. Overall, his research work on SHERLOCK and other CRISPR technologies has resulted in dozens of patent applications and patents, which have been licensed to over 50 companies now, including Sherlock Biosciences.
Looking ahead, Omar is passionate about developing tools that can accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and uncovering novel enzymes in nature that can be applied for biotechnologies and therapeutics. He continues to pursue this passion at his own laboratory at MIT (abugootlab.org) where he is further developing the Sherlock technology while also working on next-generation genome editing tools and viral delivery systems for gene therapy.
