Devising a scalable, sustainable, and economical synthesis schemes for graphene
Mohammed's innovation can be characterized as a technological breakthrough in graphene mass production, and various patent applications were filed to protect the concept. This novel method utilizes natural or synthetic graphite, which expands the application to various industries. It utilizes aqueous solutions instead of acidic environments, which underscores its environmental footprint and ease of downstream separation means. This technology has been licensed to a start-up company, which develops the next generation of anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. Within the energy industry, graphene has been investigated for potential use in numerous applications, including batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and transistors. Graphene-based fibers have attracted attention for potential industrial use in energy storage devices, aerospace, transportation vehicles, and lightweight composites. Graphene has shown great potential in biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility. This includes applications in drug delivery, biosensors, and artificial organs and wearables. Given that transportation of graphene solutions can be challenging, the novel reactor setup can be licensed to potential industrial users to produce high-quality graphene sheets on-demand by procuring graphite, which can be easily transported in powder form and doesn’t require special handling.
