innovation
An integrated, non-invasive neuroscience platform that continuously monitors and analyzes the brain health of astronauts in microgravity conditions using instruments validated during Saudi Arabia’s first manned space mission.

Dr. Bader Shirah's innovation is a pioneering neuroscience research portfolio that successfully monitored and analyzed astronaut brain health during Saudi Arabia’s inaugural human space mission (Axiom Mission 2).

The idea was driven by the national ambition of Saudi Vision 2030 and the realization that neuroscience, critical for human performance, was one of the least explored areas in space research.

His work introduced novel noninvasive technologies—including automated pupillometry, optic nerve sheath ultrasound, portable EEG, fNIRS, and blood-based biomarkers—for the first time in the Arab world to study the effects of microgravity on the human brain.

This integrated approach captured multi-layered, real-time data on intracranial pressure, cerebral perfusion, and neural activity to provide early detection of conditions like Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) and cognitive fatigue.

The successful deployment during Axiom Mission 2 validates the tools' reliability in extreme environments, positioning Saudi Arabia as a regional hub for space-health innovation. Beyond spaceflight, these same technologies are being adapted for crucial Earth-based clinical applications, such as monitoring stroke and traumatic brain injury, and for remote neurological assessment in low-resource environments.

Dr. Shirah's future plans involve advancing this research into the global standard for astronaut brain health and translating space-derived tools into routine neurological care.
